a handful of days ago on the road home: a sudden foot on the brakes, a reversal of the truck, and this sign being pointed out to me. it must have been put up just this past weekend, months after we submitted the paperwork and weeks after emailing and calling the county people in charge of the adopt-a-road program to see what was the status of our application. when i saw the actual sign, oh my heart just swelled. it’s official, we’ve adopted the road i lived on for most of my life, especially the last almost-four years. in return for this adoption, we promise to keep the road clean – something my dad would have loved. for 20 years plus, he’d go running every morning on the toepath along the potomac river and he’d always come back with a handful of plastic bottles and bags. i’m so glad i got to see the sign up and even more glad it will be here long after i leave esworthy road.
